Chapter 12

Janet got a sparkle in her eye. “Frank is funny and vibrant and always willing to try something new. That’s why I fell in love with him. He helped me step out of my comfort zone and look at life in a whole new way. Five years ago, we went skydiving.” She chuckled. “Can you believe that? Me… skydiving?” She shook her head, and a smile spread across her face. “He could talk me into anything.”

“You’re braver than me,” Cheryl said.

“Not really. I was terrified, but Frank…” She looked at a spot across the room. Then she eased herself up off the sofa and walked over to the bookshelf on the other side of the room. Picking up a picture of her and Frank together, she said, “We went to the Grand Canyon last year. I’d never been before. Have you?”

Cheryl shook her head.

Janet walked over to Cheryl, who had remained on the sofa, and handed her the picture. In it, Janet and Frank stood with their cheeks pressed together, filling much of the frame. Only a sliver of the brick-colored cavern of the Grand Canyon was visible behind them. She thought it was funny that of all the pictures they’d probably taken of their trip, this was the one they chose to display.

“It must’ve been a fun trip.” Cheryl looked at the photo for a few moments before returning her gaze to Janet.

Janet settled on the sofa next to her again. “It was amazing. Better than skydiving because I didn’t feel like I was going to die.” She let out a stifled laugh.

Cheryl laid the photo on the sofa between them.

“Frank is a thinker. He likes to solve problems, whether it be a puzzle or crossword or figuring out why the car is making that weird sound. When we were in Arizona, we happened upon the oddest little antique shop. It had a lot of interesting things. Frank found this ancient-looking book of riddles and couldn’t resist buying it. We brought it home, and he forgot about it.

“Anyway, he started getting sick, and we found out it was”—she blinked back tears—“cancer. When we first got his diagnosis, it became another problem for him to solve. He doesn’t give up easily. He read everything he possibly could about treatments. Sometimes he felt like he knew more than the doctors. Because of that, he also knew when the treatments weren’t working. He was ready for all of this long before I was.” She held out both her hands and gestured around the room. “I don’t think I ever could’ve been—” Her voice hitched.

Cheryl reached out and put her hand on Janet’s shoulder.

Janet straightened up and dabbed her eyes with the tissue. She pulled her shoulders back, trying desperately to compose herself. “I’m sorry, you’re asking about the haunting, and I’m rambling on.”

“I’m asking about anything you’re willing to tell me. There could be a clue about what’s going on in the most unlikely of places.” The ceiling creaked overhead as Adam walked around the second floor.
